If you’ve heard about R22 refrigerant being phased out for a more environmentally R-410A, then it may be in your best interest to learn about what refrigerant is and what it does. In laymen’s terms, a refrigerant works in combination with air conditioning components to absorb hot air and expel it outside, and then generate cool air and distribute it around the home, but there are different types of refrigerants we can look at:
- Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) such as R12 – scientifically proven to contribute to ozone depletion therefore production ceased in 1994.
- Hydro Chlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) such as R22 – slightly less contribution to ozone depletion but still apparent nonetheless, therefore the EPA has issued a similar production cease by 2020.
- Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) such as R-410A – no chlorine in the composition that has less environmental impact therefore safer are in place. R-410A compatible systems offer higher efficiency better air quality, reliability, and overall increased comfort.
Is it time to transition as well?
